The origin of Casares dates back to Iberian and Phoenician times, although its name comes from the Roman domination; in fact, the name of Casares is influenced by the name of Julio Cesar, who in 61 BC visited the famous Baños Hediondos de Carratraca to cure his skin disease with sulfur waters, making this place very famous throughout Rome for its healing properties.
The steep and winding streets of Casares are the perfect place to relax, discover corners that don’t appear in guidebooks, local artisan shops and small bars in town to stop off along the way.
Casares Castle
Situated at the top of the city, it overlooks the valleys, hills and coastal plains stretching from the Serranía de Ronda to the Gulf of Algeciras, offering a magnificent view of part of the province of Málaga and Cádiz.
Baths of Hediond
They say the devil breathed his last here when he was banished by Santiago. This is one of the legends that the popular imagination perpetuates to justify the smell of sulfur in the waters. These known as the Baños de la Hedionda, a resource of cultural importance, are one of the historical landmarks of the Utrera massif and Casares in general. It is about the Sulfur Baths of Iron, located in a beautiful and beneficial place, which people could use since Roman times. The square spa complex with an overhanging vault and two barrel vaults is located on the right bank of the Albarrán creek, very close to the border with the municipality of Manilva.
