Casares’ origins date back to Iberian and Phoenician times, although its name comes from Roman domination; in fact, the name Casares is influenced by the name of Julio Cesar, who in 61 BC visited the famous Baños Hediondos de Carratraca to cure himself of a skin disease using sulfuric waters, making the place very famous throughout Rome for its healing properties.

The steep and winding streets of Casares are the perfect place to relax, discover corners that don’t appear in guidebooks, local craft shops and small town bars to stop at along the way.

Casares Castle
Situated at the top of the city, it towers over the valleys, hills and coastal plains stretching from the Serranía de Ronda to the Bay of Algeciras, providing a wonderful view of part of the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz. It is one of the most picturesque and beautiful corners of the commune, which is a must-see.

Hedionda Baths
They say the devil breathed his last here when he was banished by Santiago. This is one of the legends that the folk imagination keeps alive to justify the smell of sulfur in the waters. Known as Baños de la Hedionda, a resource of cultural importance, they constitute one of the historical landmarks of the Utrera massif and the whole of Casares in general. It is about the Iron Sulfur Baths, located in a beautiful and favorable place that people have been able to use since Roman times. The square spa complex with a hanging vault and two barrel vaults is located on the right bank of the Albarrán stream, very close to the border with the commune of Manilva.
