San Fulgencio is a town in the south of the province of Alicante. It borders Daya Vieja, Dolores, Elche, Formentera del Segura, Guardamar del Segura and Rojales. It belongs to the Vega Baja region.
Although it is inland, it has numerous residential areas (La Marina, El Oasis, La Escuera, Bonavista, Las Pesqueras, etc.) that are located by the sea and are mostly inhabited by foreigners, giving it a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Located in the middle of the Vega Baja of the Segura river, between fields of vegetables, cereals and orange trees, San Fulgencio is a completely flat town, except for the north, where it is protected by the Sierra del Molar. It is only 2 km from the coast.
Although the municipality has traditionally been dedicated to agriculture, today its most important activities are the service sector and tourism.
San Fulgencio is located 15 km from Elche and 36 km from Alicante.
WHAT TO SEE:
- Church of San Fulgencio. A parish church built in the 18th century. Although it is Baroque in style, it stands out for its austerity and simplicity. Its interior has a Greek cross plan, with a dome in the centre, and three naves, the narrowest and longest of which in the centre reaches up to the head where the main altar, tabernacle and image of the patron saint are located. . - Archaeological Museum. Founded in 1993, this museum collects a range of objects found in the municipality. It mainly collects Iberian and Greek ceramics.
LOCAL EVENTS:
- Celebrations of San Fulgencio and San Antonio Abad. On 16 and 17 January, there are processions in honour of the two saints, the blessing of animals and bread, and a traditional meal shared by all the town’s inhabitants.
- Pilgrimage of San Isidro Labrador On the Sunday after 15 May, a pilgrimage is held in honour of the patron saint of farmers. The saint is transported in a cart pulled by oxen to Paraje El Oasis, where a mass is celebrated.
- Celebration of Our Lady of Peace. Summer festivities were held on the first weekend of August in the Urbanización La Marina.
Fiestas of the Virgin of the Remedy In October, there are fiestas in honour of the patron saint. Street decorations, parades, floral offerings to the Virgin and fireworks.
