Location:

The city of Torrevieja is located about 40 minutes (45 km) from Alicante, one of the largest cities in the region. The city boasts an extraordinary, healthy microclimate, whose healing properties are derived from, among other things, the large salt deposits in the two salt lagoons located in the middle of the city.

It is an amazing experience to see these two lakes: pink and green, which are surrounded by natural parks with many species of birds, including flamingos. The Laguna de Torrevieja owes its pink colour to the high salinity of the water, the shellfish that live here and the algae that produce carotenoids. The sight is very impressive, no wonder it is one of the biggest tourist attractions of the place.
The second lagoon (La Laguna de la Mata) is green. The park’s interpretation centre is located here. We can see unusual vegetation here, such as Aleppo pine, orchid, thyme, cistus, and many others.

The vineyards where the local wine de la Mata is produced are also worth mentioning.

The climate in Torrevieja is perfect for sunbathing and relaxing on one of the many sandy beaches. There are so many to choose from that it is difficult to decide which beach to choose for your holiday. One of the most popular beaches is Playa de la Mata, which is about 2.5 km long. This beautiful sandy beach has been awarded the Blue Flag and is accessible to disabled people. Those who like to spend time actively on the beach can play on one of the several volleyball courts.

On the north side of the city, there are two beaches, Playa de los Locos and Playa del Cura. Both are equipped with full infrastructure and have been awarded the Blue Flag. In the city centre, next to the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio seaside promenade, you can swim in natural pools that have been formed among the rocky coastline. You can also see the Monument to the Man of the Sea and La Bella Lola sitting on a bench. It is also worth visiting the beaches located in the coves. Cala Ferris and Cala Piteras with their magnificent views, palm trees and dunes. You can also go snorkelling in the latter.

It is worth taking a stroll along the elegant promenade (Vista Alegre). Here, you can feel the atmosphere of the city and relax while admiring the beautiful views.
Along the promenade, you will find a large number of bars, restaurants, cafes, ice cream parlours, and shops selling souvenirs and handicrafts. For those looking for excitement, Torrevieja offers the Aquopolis water park and an amusement park close to the promenade. During the summer season, the open-air discos are also very popular, attracting thousands of people.

Torrevieja is the perfect place for people who enjoy various kinds of sports. There are many sports facilities, football pitches, handball courts, tennis courts, rugby pitches, swimming pools, as well as gyms and a boxing club.

Although today the city impresses with its architecture and sometimes splendour, until 1802 there was only one building here, namely the observation tower from which the city takes its name. Torre vieja means ’old tower’ in English.
